Legal Assistance for displaced iraqis by UNHCR
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, with its partners has provided legal assistance to help more than two and a half thousand Iraqis displaced as a result of the Mosul offensive receive new civil identity cards and other documents that were lost, damaged or destroyed as they fled their homes seeking safety. Civil identity cards are vital for Iraqi citizens to be able to travel and pass through checkpoints to access safe areas. In addition, these cards are required for families to be able to access public services, such as food assistance, education, healthcare and housing assistance. UNHCR protection teams have worked with partners Qandil, Harikar NGO, CDO (Civil Development Organisation) and INTERSOS, who have provided legal assistance through lawyers to facilitate issuance of required documents to displaced Iraqis.

SALAHDIN GOVERNORATE
BAÏJI
WAHA International intervenes in Baïji alternative hospital, including in the maternity and reproductive healthcare department, as well as in the emergency room and operating theater, which is ready to provide surgical care to casualties. The organization also set up a referral and transportation system for patients in need of a higher level of medical care.
AL ALAM
WAHA International opened an emergency room and a maternity in Al Alam hospital. We also deployed a mobile clinic providing primary healthcare services to displaced populations in Al Alam camps 1, 2 and 3. A second mobile unit allows us to carry out outreach activities in surrounding villages, including Azwai. When necessary, patients are referred to Al Alam Hospital.
AL DOR
WAHA International opened an emergency room and a maternity in Al-Dor primary health center.
MOSUL
HASAN SHAM
In the village of Hasan Sham, East of Mosul, we are providing reproductive healthcare with a mobile unit open 6 days a week in a camp run by UNHCR and the Iraqi Ministry of Displacement and Migration. We also conduct outreach activities to inform women of the available services and increase use.
KHAZER
WAHA provides a rapid response for pregnant women in the villages surrounding Khazer by running a fully equipped mobile delivery unit.
AL ZAHRAA
In Al Zahraa, situated in Mosul, WAHA is supporting a maternity unit, an emergency room and the provision of primary health care in a local health facility.
QAYYARA DISTRICT
QAYYARA
In Qayyara, South of Mosul, WAHA International refurbished two floors of Qayyara hospital and supports the provision of trauma care services as well as of comprehensive reproductive health care services.
Leveraging WAHA International’s initial support, the hospital is currently being fully refurbished by the local Department of Health.
We are also ensuring the provision of primary health care services at the nearby Qayyara primary health center.
DEBAGA
We are running a reproductive health care unit including a delivery room, in partnership with UNFPA within Debaga city in the district of Makhmur. We are also running a mobile clinic in Debaga Camp 2 which is situated in Debaga village.
DOHUK, TALL AFAR & SINJAR MOUNTAINS
DOHUK
We provide specialized mental health services for women and children suffering from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder and for survivors of gender based violence. We support Azadi Hospital and the Mental Healthcare Centre for Children and Adolescents with staff and specific training and deploy two mobile units in surrounding camps.
Three options are available according to the severity of the need: follow-up as out-patient, enrolment in our program at the day hospital to maintain links with family and ensure relatives play an active role in the therapy, and, for severe and acute cases, short-term in-patient treatment.
TALL AFAR
Now that essential services (water, electricity) are becoming available again and that the security situation allows local populations to return, WAHA International set up a primary health center in Tall Afar to meet their essential health needs.
SARDESHTI
In Sardeshti, we provide primary healthcare services in a container based health facility. The clinic provides essential care in an area that was previously cut off from medical services during IS occupation.
SNUNY HOSPITAL
We rehabilitated the Snuny hospital, and we are running 24/7 primary health and reproductive health care departments including a delivery room.

- The food aid provision for people-in-need, refugees and IDPs has been the most active working area of the BCF. Two types of food is provided by the BCF:
Hot fresh meals, this is mostly provided in acute and emergency situation especially at the first stages of displacement by refugees and IDPs at their new place of arrival (in or out of camps) or following emergency situations due to natural disasters. In some cases hot food has been provided for Peshmerga troops in the Kurdistan Region.
Staple (dry) food: this type of food consists of major food items necessary to prepare food and is provided to people-in-need, refugees and IDPs. After settling, people are helped to rely on themselves and prepare their own food.
- Provision of household supplies. In this filed, the BCF assists the host community, refugees and IDPs to meet their essential household needs such as:
- Accommodation needs such as tents, rugs, and sleeping facilities
- Water storage and food preparation facilities
- Sanitation and hygiene maintenance material and equipment
- Provision of clothing for children and adults
- Provision of baby and children essentials and toys

Housing
In the last 20 years, living conditions for the vast majority of the population have improved greatly. Electricity and running water are normal features of all Iraqi villages in rural areas. Mud huts in remote places are rapidly being replaced by brick dwellings. Major cities like Mosul, Basrah, and especially Baghdad have most of the amenities of modern living.
Traditionally, Iraqis have lived in single family dwellings, but in the last 15 years, the government had built a number of high-rise apartments, especially in Baghdad. It had done so to control urban sprawl and to cut down on suburban service expenditures. From 1980–88, total housing units numbered 2,478,000 with 6.5 people per dwelling.
The 2003 invasion of Iraq by international coalition forces caused destruction and damage to a large portion of the housing sector, particularly in and around Baghdad. The UN responded to the crisis by providing construction materials through the Oil for Food Program. The housing sector had been part of this program since 2000. Through the program, about 64,932 housing units were built to accommodate about 551,922 people.
In November 2017, The Minister of MoCHMPW, stated the endorsement of the new housing policy coincide with the liberation of most of the previously controlled areas by ISIL and the exacerbation of challenges to reconstruct the damaged areas, and its timely occasion to discuss the future role of UN-Habitat to enhance its contribution to support the Government’s efforts in reconstruction and to transform the Iraqi cities into more inclusive, secure, sustainable and resilient. In Iraq, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) persons are subject to widespread discrimination. While homosexuality itself has been legal since 2003 (after removal of sodomy from the criminal code), openly gay men are not permitted to serve in the military and same sex marriage is illegal. LGBT persons do not have any legal protections against discrimination and are frequently victims of vigilante justice and honor killings. Articles such as 400 in the Penal Code of 1969, can be used against LGBT community.
