China has been having a mall construction boom. According to the CBRE research group, in 2013 the Chinese built half of the brand new mall space in the world, but there was a 30 percent vacancy in malls in 2014.

More new mall space (2.9 sq km) is being built in Chengdu than in 89 Western European cities combined.

1. New Century Global Center, Chengdu
